Do You Know Of Any Bikes That Are Good For This Setting?

Categories: Bicycle Commuting | December 31st, 2009 | by admin | 3 comments

A Reader Asks…

I live in a somewhat urban area with some traffic but I like to ride around the parks a lot. To commute I ride through the streets during rush hour. I like bicycles that aren’t so bumpy but aren’t so heavy with wide handlebars. Do you know of bikes that are sort of inbetween a mountain bike and a road bike?

Would A “chainsaw-powered” Bicycle Be Street Legal In Colorado?

Categories: Bicycle Commuting | December 30th, 2009 | by admin | one comments

A Reader Asks…

I am planning on making a chainsaw powered bike for my daily commute… heres an example of a chainsaw powered bike:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dSNY-DOKvjA
its a regular bicycle but theres a chainsaw (motor) attached somewhere on the bike and the clutch with a bike chain going from the clutch to the sprocket on the back wheel. most go about 25-30 mph. so would what you see in the video be street legal in colorado.
—EDIT—
i live in a small town…
main street and in town-15 mph
up and down the mountain-25 mph

Can You Replace Your Car With A Bicycle In Los Angeles?

Categories: Bicycle Commuting | December 29th, 2009 | by admin | 4 comments

A Reader Asks…

So, I know that everyone says that you can’t get by without a car in LA. I might be moving out there for work (likely in Burbank); I am also a hippie type who doesn’t want to need a car. Right now I am looking at getting a folding electric bicycle (google the Riviera or the eZee Quadro if you’re interested in what I mean) to replace my car, but I am living on the East Coast, and it would work out for my situation.
In LA, though – can you get around easily enough on a bicycle? Is it possible to get around Burbank (or other parts of LA) without going on big highways that would be terrifying to ride on a bicycle? How about a motorcycle, would that make more sense? If I end up living outside Burbank, would it be impossible to commute by bike? Are there some parts of LA that are more bike-friendly than others?
Thanks.

What Bicycle Is Right For Me?

Categories: Bicycle Commuting | December 28th, 2009 | by admin | 6 comments

A Reader Asks…

I want to purchase a new bicycle and I’m not sure which kind to buy. Some things I do know:
Price range: between ($300-$1,000)
Intended biking distance: between 15-30 miles/day, hopefully 70+ once I get in shape. (I am in my early 20’s and I weigh 150)
Biking primarily on: bike paths, city streets (some that are busy), rough bumpy sidewalks, occasional grass
Use for bike: workout, short commutes under 15 miles, the hope of using it to try solo touring/w camping (carrying as little as possible)
What kind of bike is best for me? Touring? Road? Hybrid? Mountain? And of those, does anyone own and use a bike with similar conditions as I explained above? What specific bike(s) would you recommend? Any help is most appreciated!

What Is The Best Commuter Bicycle?

Categories: Bicycle Commuting | December 27th, 2009 | by admin | 4 comments

A Reader Asks…

A few weeks back I posted a question pertaining to Scooters (gas-powered) and found them in essence to be more trouble than they are worth especially so in terms of their legality from state to state so I decided to look into alternative transportation. I am now seriously considering human-powered (pedal or other) as well as electric bicycles as a less aggravating alternative to solve my transportation needs, Would someone please recommend some excellent human-powered as well as some excellent electric bikes (powerful but inconspicuous to authorities in regards to electric bikes.) Also would someone please tell me (from their own experience) how they feel about “Trikkes” I need something for commuting a short distance (two miles) to work but I’d also like the option to commute a little further comfortably if I need to, Thanks for your Input!

Has Anyone Seen Bicycling Being Promoted Well In Recent News?

Categories: Bicycle Commuting | December 26th, 2009 | by admin | 7 comments

Did they do a good job? Where did you see it? I know it is difficult to change the mindset of millions of drivers. Has there been an article or articles that might properly encourage commuting and general use of the bicycle for errands, etc?
