Why Can’t There Be A Us City That Bans Automobiles And Used Hot Air Balloons Instead?
A Reader Asks…
And instead use bicycles, horse and buggies, and hot air balloons.
Wouldn’t you rather commute from home to work in a Hot Air Balloon that’s near free?

How do you expect a Hot Air Balloon ambulance, firetruck, or emergency vehicle to be responsive?
Hot air balloons still need fuel to heat up the air.
Hot air balloons are expensive to maintain and produce, and are very, very bulky. There’s also the issue of stabilizing a balloon of that size and directing it in the presence of fierce storms and high winds that exist in the air… Anything higher than 30 feet off the ground will experience higher intensity winds that will tend to blow it off course. I also don’t see what problem exactly hot air balloons will solve. They are (I’m guessing) far less efficient than cars and burn waay more fuel.
Bicycles will work.
Horse and buggy is downright horrible. Horses die in the streets and stink up the entire road until someone can come by to remove them (which is harder than it seems). They also dump their crap on the street and the stench alone is unbearable.
However, there is a city somewhere on the border of the US if I remember correctly, where an architect became mayor and designed the city so that all buildings are walking-distance from each other and there were no streets for cars. Instead they had a state-of-the-art monorail/bus system where a shuttle came every 3 minutes to each location.
There are a few villages near me that has hardly any cars. Granted, most people there are Amish, but they use buggies and bikes. As for the balloons, how would you propose heating the air in the balloon?
and what about fire trucks and ambulances and police? what if my house catches on fire?! i want something a little faster than a hot air balloon! high speed chases? i just giggled out loud.
Probably because that’s so ridiculous
Balloons are great recreation but in no way could be used for dependable navigational transportation
I nominate Berkley California. Plenty of hot air for the balloons and lots of air head people too.
Ok because you can not control the direction of a hot air balloon. and cars are more logical and convenient.
there are several cities that ban cars….not for hot air baloons, but for battery powered vehicles/golf carts or trolleys.
Honda is shipping hydrogen powered cars to the US next month.http://news.cnet.com/8301-17912_3-996926…
I think Washington would be the best city to start.. Lots of liberals and lots of hot air.
It sounds like fun, but hot air balloons are pretty big I think.
I ride a bike everywhere I go: to school, gym, gymnastics etc.
that would just work wonderfully here in south dakota where we have winter 7out of 12 months…..
“……horse and buggies…..”
I would rather use a pogo stick instead.
that would be awesome.. i would have to move to that city!!!!
Because people need cars, doesnt matter what city they live in.
